Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado executed a high level of boxing, connected more often from the first to the last round, to defeat Zimbabwean challenger Kudakwashe Chiwindare by unanimous decision, and in turn retained for the fifth time her WBC super bantamweight world championship.
In the main event of a contest that Zanfer and 2M Promotioins presented in the majestic “Manuel Bernardo Aguirre” gym of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, and was broadcast by Azteca 7, Mercado showcased one of her best performances with great technique, concentration, rhythm, and experience.
“Yeimi” (21-3, 5 KO’s) was effective in her fight plan, and that made her shine. She varied her offense, connected up and down, was equally aggressive as she counterpunched and had an active defense that frustrated her challenger.
Chiwandire (6-3-1, 4 KO’s) had only flashes of success, with her jab being her main blow but she couldn’t follow up, and when she tried to press, she was met by power shots from the world champion.
At times the fight got dirty, and even there, “Yeimi” managed to connect more effectively.
Round after round, the boxing, the dynamism and the execution of her fight plan made Yamileth look like the dominator.
In the eighth round, Mercado staggered the challenger, and looked for the finish, and although she connected power combinations, her opponent was able to weather the storm and survive.
After then rounds, Mercado won every round on one official card with a tally of 100-90, the other two scores were 99-91 and 98-92, for the clear unanimous decision win.
