IBF featherweight champion Josh Warrington (30-0 7 KOs) is still very much interested in a showdown with WBA champion Xu Can (18-2 3 KOs) of China.
Their contest was on the verge of being announced, and then the entire sport of boxing was shelved due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Warrington had recently parted ways with promoter Frank Warren and reunited with Eddie Hearn, who had previously guided his career.
At the moment, there is not telling when or where Warrington will fight again. There is a deal in place for a clash with Xu, but that could change depending on what the travel restrictions are in the coming months.
Both Warrington and Xu throw a high volume of punches, which is why Warrington expects enough fireworks in the bout to generate a meeting that everyone would remember for a very long time.
“Can Xu was the front-runner for my next fight and that’s where we ended before this started. Within the space of five days it went from ‘we could have an announcement’ to ‘it’s not happening any time soon’ because of the pandemic,” Warrington told Matchroom Boxing’s podcast, The Lockdown Tapes.
“I haven’t been down about it though; I’ve kept myself ticking over because I think that it’s still going to happen. He’s WBA champion, in his last fight he threw about 1400 punches, he’s a busy guy and you know what, you want to be part of memorable fights that people are excited about and people talk about and say ‘I’ve watched that fight so many times.'”
