Tim Tszyu: I Want To Knock Charlo Out, I Don’t Want Distance Fight

Junior middleweight contender Tim Tszyu is not looking to win a twelve round decision when he challenges Jermell Charlo for the IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO world titles.

Their mandatory undisputed showdown is tipped to take place on January 28 in Las Vegas.

“I don’t want this fight going the distance. I plan on knocking him out before the twelfth round. This is no bullsh!t man, you get this opportunity once in a lifetime. You can win world titles in divisions, but to be undisputed in the four-belt era, it doesn’t happen often, it’s only happened seven times in boxing history,” Tszyu said to WA Today.

“This is the Super Bowl of the NFL, the NBA play-offs, the last winning shot, a buzzer beater. This is the World Cup grand final. This is not just the biggest moment in boxing but in sports. It’s massive, it doesn’t get better.”

Tszyu’s Hall of Fame father, Kostya Tszyu, was an undisputed world champion at junior welterweight, but that achievement came in the three belt era.

Tszyu wants to become the first in the family to become undisputed in the four belt era.

“Back then there wasn’t a four-belt era, he did it in the three-belt era,” Tszyu said.

“What Dad did, he didn’t just win it … he then defended it 20 times. One thing is winning it, the other is doing something else in history. We are here to create history, to create special sporting moments, not just boxing moments.”

Tszyu made his American debut back in March, when he traveled to Minneapolis to win a twelve round unanimous decision over United States Olympian Terrell Gausha. In the first round, Tszyu suffered the first knockdown of his pro career, but he recovered and eventually took control of the action as the fight played out.
