WBC, IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence is looking to get back in the mix with big fights.
Spence was in the ring back in September, when he won a very tough twelve round decision over Shawn Porter to unify their welterweight titles at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
He was on his way to a potential title defense against Danny Garcia in the early months of 2020 – but a car accident in October derailed those plans, as the unbeaten boxer needed some time to recover from the injuries he sustained.
If Spence had a choice to map out his next three fights – he would make his defense against Garcia, then have a unification with Manny Pacquiao for the WBA title, and then have a full division unification for the WBO title with Terence Crawford.
“My realistic goals are Danny Garica, Pacquiao, and Terence Crawford, or Pacquiao then Terence Crawford that’s my goal. I don’t want to leave 147 without fighting Terence Crawford,” Spence said to Brian Custer on The Last Stand podcast.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there is no indication on when or where Spence will return – or the opponent. Garcia has been pushing to get his expected crack at Spence.
The unexpected time off, and the accident, gave Spence a lot of time to think about his career, his future and his life.
“Don’t take things for granted, at the time I was taking a lot of things for granted. Slacking off on my training and basically not as focused as I use to be. For me it was a get back on the ball and heed the warning! I mean that [car accident] was a big warning because that should’ve been fatal,” Spence said.
