Errol Spence Jr. is on the verge of having the fight of his life, but that doesn’t mean he can’t have a bit of fun.
On July 29th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Spence is officially set to take on current WBO welterweight champion, Terence Crawford.
Big, bad, and in possession of three of the four major straps at 147 pounds, Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) is putting his body through hell for what he’ll have to deal with on that Saturday night. Recently, while the pair did their media obligations and press tour, both Spence and Crawford were asked to rate each other’s overall ability. The categories asked were footwork, defense, power, speed, punch resistance, conditioning, ring IQ, and resume.
After giving their thoughts, Spence ultimately rated Crawford a 5.4 out of 10. In addition to the low score, Spence gave Crawford’s resume just a 0.5. Spence though, burst into laughter when asked if he was serious about the score. With a smile plastered to his face, Spence admitted that he was just kidding around…somewhat.
“Some of it is how I see,” said Spence to ESPN. “Some of it is promoting the fight.”
Although he’s been practically unbeatable at 147 pounds, one of Crawford’s proudest achievements came one weight division lower.
During his days as a super lightweight, Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs) aggregated every world title, doing so against Thomas Dulorme, Viktor Postol, and Julius Indongo. All of those previously mentioned names have been lambasted by Spence. Even Crawford’s undefeated welterweight run has been ripped to shreds. The likes of Shawn Porter and Kell Brook, opponents Spence faced as well, were thought to be at the end of their careers by the time Crawford got his hands on them.
Fun and games aside, Spence, despite giving little to no respect to Crawford’s resume, knows good and well that he’s in for one helluva fight come July 29th.
“I don’t rate his opponents high but I rate his skill level and talent super high.”
