Ryan Garcia Return Still on Track For July 4, Says Golden Boy Prez

If everything goes as expected, Golden Boy Promotions will relaunch their company events on July 4 with Ryan García, either at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, or at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas – according to company president Eric Gomez.

Gómez said that for now the opponent will neither be Jorge Linares nor Abner Mares, but he will be someone of quality that allows Garcia to demonstrate that he is ready for a fight with former champion Linares and then go hunting for the world championship.

“We are working with DAZN, we want to return on July 4, there are some details [to work out] to do this function, obviously, without an audience, and that’s normal for everything that is happening due to the coronavirus,” said Gomez to ESPN Deportes.

“We are looking at doing it in California, because it is the most convenient, it could also be Nevada because they are accepting boxing events without an audience, but the first option is California. It is a new world, the most important thing for us is that everyone is well, that it is a healthy place, that no one gets infected with the virus, but I am almost sure that we are going on July 4th at Fantasy Springs Casino, because the commission has already accepted an arena, it is a small arena and the hotel is a minute away on foot.”

Gómez pointed out that the protocols are expensive, since it is not just about the tests, but that many people will have to be isolated, the fighters, their teams, the people with the commission, the employees of Golden Boy, of DAZN.

“It will be expensive and it will not be easy, but the important thing is that boxing will return and that is what we want, people are hungry to see boxing,” Gomez said.
