Raymond Ford knows that he had a bit of a slip-up earlier in his career. Considering his talent and pedigree, Ford (14-0-1, 7 KOs) was expected to run through Aaron Perez in 2021. Don’t let the undefeated record of Perez fool you. Following his split decision draw against Ford, Perez lost his very next outing against a fighter with a record of just 3-2-3.
Since then, Ford has essentially blown the rest of his competition out of the water. Along the way, Ford begged and pleaded with the rest of the division’s top dogs to step up to the plate and face him. Jessie Magdaleno, a former world champion, took Ford up on his offer.
On April 8th, at the Boeing Center in San Antonio, Texas, Ford made Magdaleno look like an amateur as he cruised to a unanimous decision victory. Now, for the first time in his pro-life, Ford has a bit of power at his disposal.
There are a few things Ford can do. Number one, he can sit back and play the waiting game. The super featherweight division’s current world champions are all in need of a dance partner. Meaning, if Ford stays patient he could be given the call.
If that option isn’t exactly appetizing, Ford could look to pick off another surging contender. Beating those names before they become a thorn in his future side would be a way for Ford to remain both active and sharp.
With more than half of the year melted away already, Ford has to put a bit of a pep in his step and make his decision. All options are currently on the table for the 24-year-old. But ultimately, Ford pulled out his crystal ball and took an educated guess on what could be next.
Money is important but winning a world title has always been a dream of Ford. And, if he’s proven to be a prophet, Ford believes that his number one goal will be checked off his to-do list a lot sooner than many realize.
“This year,” said Ford to YSM Sports Media when asked when he expects to fight for a title. “If not this year, the beginning of next year.”
