Munguia Overcomes Near Disaster, Drops Derevyanchenko in Final Round To Win Decision in War

Ontario, California – In a super middleweight showdown, Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) overcame near disaster and had to dig deeper than every to win a razor-thin twelve round unanimous decision over Sergiy Derevyanchenko (14-5, 10 KOs)

The scores were 115-112, 114-113 and 114-113.

It didn’t take long before they were trading bombs in the first round. It was fireworks with Munguia eating some big shots during their exchanges, before he came back with some body shots later on.

During the second, Derevyanchenko was rocked by a left to the top of the head. Munguia jumped in to finish him off and it turned into another war of punches as they Derevyanchenko fought his way out of trouble. During the third, it was Munguia who was rocked and then Derevyanchenko unloaded with combinations of big shots until the Mexican boxer fought him off.

In the fourth, Munguia had the edge by working the jab and following it up with big combinations.  In the fifth, Munguia was seriously hurt by several big punches and appeared to be on the verge of getting knocked out. He barely survived the round as Derevyanchenko had him ready to go with punishing punches to the head.

During the sixth, Munguia had a good bounce back round as he mainly used the jab and kept Derevyanchenko at the distance. In the seventh, the action was close with both having moments. The eight saw Derevyanchenko using a good jab, as was Munguia. Derevyanchenko’s legs seemed to dip during an exchange, but then he was tagging Munguia with heavy blows to the head and body. 

The ninth had another close action round, with both landing solid shots, but Derevyanchenko had the edge. The tenth had Derevyanchenko landing accurate punches and moving away when needed and holding when needed. In the eleventh, they were trading away in close. Derevyanchenko looked tired and was holding often. Munguia stunned him with a series of punches and was looking for the finish, but the fighter from Ukraine managed to overcome the rally. 

In the twelfth and final round, a big body shot sent Derevyanchenko down in pain. It seemed to be a liver shot. Munguia went after him for the finish and had him ready to go, but Derevyanchenko managed to survive by moving around the ring until the final bell.
