Liam Davies Eager For Statement Win: I’m Looking To Do a Job on This Fella

There may be louder and more high profile fighters operating in the UK but not many have got as much to shout about as Liam Davies.

Within the space of 14 fights, underrated Davies (14-0, 6 KO’s) has collected the British and European super bantamweight titles and hoovered up a whole host of international belts.

Davies is ranked by all of the governing bodies and seems on course for a world title fight at some point in 2024.

None of which will matter if the 27 year old loses to Vincenzo La Femina (13-0, 7 KO’s) on November 18th. The Italian champion has an unblemished professional record but hasn’t mixed in anything like the company Davies has. Beating La Femina would cap off an excellent twelve months for the Telford man. He outboxed the dangerous Ionut Balut last November and took the respected and decorated Jason Cunningham apart inside a round in July.

“Frank’s talking about a world title in Telford so hopefully we can make it happen,” Davies told Dev Sahni for Queensberry.

“I’m looking to do a job on this fella. I’m looking the business in the gym so I’ve just got to carry it on. I’ve got good momentum behind me, I’m training hard and what a card to do the business on. That’s my aim, to look better than everybody else.

“He’s an undefeated guy and he’s hungry. The way I’m looking at it, this is his big opportunity. He’s probably never been on a stage like this. He’s getting well paid and he’s probably thinking that if he wins, he can get even more. It’s my job to knock that belief straight out of him from the blocks and show everybody watching that I’m a serious boxer and that I will become world champion. That’s the only belt I haven’t got and I’m going to keep banging on about it until I have got it.”

The super bantamweight division is stacked and there isn’t an easy route to a world title, not that Davies is interested in easy routes. He has already mentioned that he would be extremely interested in taking on IBF and WBA Super champion, Marlon Tapales, and IBO belt holder, Erik Robles Ayala.

Japanese superstar, Naoya Inoue, holds the WBC and WBO titles and is undoubtedly the man to beat at 122lbs. Davies is intent on securing his own world title before calling for a fight with ‘The Monster’ but he certainly wouldn’t say no if a lucrative opportunity presented itself.

“I’ve always said this. A boxer will fight anyone. I’ve had over 120 fights and I’ll box anyone and everyone. I’m not gonna stand here and call him out because that’s disrespectful and he’s a great fighter but if I get a phone call telling me ‘You’ve got half a million quid, go to Japan,’ I’ll turn up there with a big f—— smile on my face.”
