Jon Jones relinquishes UFC light heavyweight title, hints at heavyweight run – Fighters Only

Jon Jones announced on Twitter that he was relinquishing his UFC light heavyweight championship.

“Just got off the phone with [the UFC],” Jones stated. “Today I confirm that I’m vacating the light heavyweight championship. It’s officially up for grabs. It’s been an amazing journey, sincere thank you to all my competition, UFC and most importantly, you fans.”

The Jackson Wink product is the most dominant UFC light heavyweight champion of all time, boasting records such as the the most successful light heavyweight title defences in UFC history (11) and the most wins in the UFC division’s history with 19.

“Bones” last fought to a close decision win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February.

Jones put his career on pause amid a dispute with the UFC over the money he would be paid for a rumoured fight at heavyweight with Francis Ngannou earlier in 2020.

While many fans would fear this could be the death knell sounding for Jones’ UFC run, Bones has publicly renewed his interest in competing as a heavyweight since the UFC heavyweight title trilogy bout between Stipe Miocic and rival Daniel Cormier at UFC 252 on Saturday.

Jones reiterated his interest in competing above 205 pounds after revealing that he had vacated his light heavyweight title and later hinted at some good news.

Jones at heavyweight certainly serves up an interesting proposition for a division which is at its most competitive for a long time.

Are we going to see Jones fighting at heavyweight next? Let’s hope so.
