Terence Crawford has never been short on confidence but as of late, his call-outs have gotten bolder and bolder.
A one-sided beat down of Errol Spence Jr. on July 29th was satisfying for the Omaha, Nebraska, native. But it also stripped him of his biggest challenge. For years now, the boxing world was interested in seeing what would happen if the two officially squared off. With that question being answered in the most violent way, Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) is now seeking new challenges.
Of course, the 35-year-old is contractually obligated to give Spence an immediate rematch. But assuming the sequel looks identical to the prequel, Crawford’s mind is racing. Although the likes of Jaron Ennis and Keith Thurman are calling for their shot at his undisputed throne, Crawford appears fixated on moving up in weight.
No, the pound-for-pound star isn’t interested in simply campaigning in the junior middleweight division. Nor is he found in the desolate land of the 160s. Instead, Crawford has stated on countless occasions that a matchup between himself and Canelo Alvarez is “The biggest fight in boxing.”
Even if that statement is true, Crawford will be asked to put on 21 pounds and move up three weight divisions in order to make that showdown a reality.
For now, Crawford will sit back, relax, and watch what takes place on September 30th. On the night, Canelo will attempt to defend his undisputed throne against Jermell Charlo.
The two may dislike one another but both Crawford and Charlo have the same goal, to become an undisputed champion in a division no one saw coming.
Being the naturally bigger man, Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) is finding it relatively easy to gain natural size as he continues to prepare for Alvarez. In the case of Crawford, Charlo doesn’t understand why he’s so insistent on competing against anyone in the super middleweight division. Although he’s a pound-for-pound star, future Hall of Famer, and one of the best fighters that’s ever lived – Crawford’s brazen move up in weight isn’t the most sagacious decision in Charlo’s opinion.
“Don’t bite off more than you can chew,” Charlo told Cigar Talk. “Don’t write a check yo ass can’t cash.”
