Bryce Mitchell’s twister submission victory over Matt Sayles is nominated for the Submission of the Year in the 12th annual World MMA Awards.

At the tail end of 2019, Bryce Mitchell announced to the world how good – and fun – his ground game is by snatching a rare twister submission victory over  Matt Sayles at UFC on ESPN 7 in Washington, DC.

Mitchell went to work quickly in the fight, executing a takedown before having his way with Sayles on the floor.

Sayles wasn’t able to stop Mitchell from taking his back, moving in and out of full mount and more as the latter displayed the impressive fluidity of his jiu jitsu.

Beleaguered from having to constantly defend position against a relentless Mitchell, Sayles soon left an unlikely opening few fighters would take you up on.

As they transitioned from full mount to Sayles giving up his back again, Mitchell grabbed Sayles’ right arm to control it while wrapping his legs around his opponent’s left leg. Mitchell then cranked on Sayles’ neck to contort his body in an unnatural – and extremely painful – way to secure only the second twister submission in UFC history.
