Eddie Hearn has been charged with finding IBF super featherweight champion, Joe Cordina, the biggest and most lucrative opportunities available.
Cordina successfully defended his title in Monte Carlo on Saturday night after a much tougher than expected fight with Edward Vazquez. Cordina was awarded a majority decision but the smaller Texan was able to drag Cordina into a war and there was a tense wait before the scorecards were announced.
Hearn has plenty of irons in the fire. Cordina has been heavily linked to a 2024 fight with his fellow Brit, Leigh Wood. Wood relinquished his WBA featherweight title after his thrilling come from behind knockout of Josh Warrington and will now campaign at 130lbs. There has also been plenty of speculation that Cordina could meet WBC champion, O’Shaquie Foster, in a super featherweight unification.
Hearn believes that the nature of Cordina’s fight with Vazquez may grease the wheels a little.
“I think that a lot of people will watch that performance and think, ‘OK, I‘ll fight him.’” Hearn told Boxing Social.
“How keen Ben Davison [Wood’s trainer] was before tonight? Who knows. How keen he is as of now? Who knows but probably keener. That’s probably the same for O’Shaquie Foster and the others as well.
“Look, Joe Cordina has made it very clear to me that he wants the biggest fights out there for the most amount of money. Don’t even rule out a move to 135lbs at some point and you’ll see better from Joe Cordina next time. I think he needs those big challenges to see the very best of him.”
