Regis Prograis did some digging around. With his showdown against Devin Haney coming up, the current WBC super lightweight champ wanted to know if Haney’s flawless record was legitimate.
From the outside looking in, there isn’t much to question. Haney has entered the ring a total of 30 times and hasn’t come out on the losing end against anyone. If you look closer, however, Haney’s record, according to Prograis, is just a mirage.
In 10 of his first 15 fights, Haney crossed the border and fought in Mexico. It allowed him to gain experience and expedite his learning curve. If you look at his record, all signs point to Haney dominating while he was on the other side of the world. But, after doing his own research, Prograis claims that Haney actually lost a fight during his time in Mexico.
So why doesn’t Haney’s record reflect that loss? Well, Prograis stated that Haney paid to get that defeat removed. The 24-year-old was both confused and dumbfounded by Prograis’ statement.
Ultimately, he isn’t perturbed by any of it. At the moment, Haney is focused on adding a bit more muscle to his frame and perfecting his overall skills. He knows that Prograis, whose lone defeat came at the hands of Josh Taylor several years ago, is the real deal.
As for his supposed loss in Mexico, Haney recently confronted Prograis over it. In the end, the Las Vegas resident isn’t sweating what he considers to be bogus claims. The mere thought of losing in Mexico against a fighter who never amounted to anything, is the most absurd thing Haney has heard all year.
“He knows the truth,” said a smiling Haney to a group of reporters recently. “He knows my resume speaks for itself. It’s no blemishes on my record. Come on now, losing in Mexico? It was a good try.”
