Former unified middleweight world champion Gennadiy Golovkin has been elected as the new president of Kazakhstan’s National Olympic Committee following an extraordinary general meeting in the capital of Astana.
Golovkin, who has not fought since his loss to Canelo Alvarez in September 2022, has been out of the limelight since, with intrigue surrounding his future as he approaches his 42nd birthday.
Golovkin’s new position within Kazakhstan’s sporting authorities means he could be all but set to retire from the sport and focus on the boardroom instead.
Golovkin had been nominated to replace Timur Kulibayev as president of Kazakhstan’s NOC on February 14.
Tengri Sport published the commission’s official letter to the general assembly after Golovkin had been nominated which read, “The Olympic sports federations have nominated Gennady Gennadievich Golovkin for the position of CON President.”
Kazakhstan news agency Interfax-Kazakhstan reported that the process to elect Golovkin for the presidency of the National Olympic Committee had been successful.
Golovkin’s future as a professional fighter remains unclear, however, with promoter Tom Loeffler recently saying he would support whatever the former unified middleweight champion chose to do.
“Whatever decision he [Golovkin] makes, whether he wants to fight again or decides to hang up the gloves, we will support him 100 per cent,” said Loeffler.
Golovkin’s pro record stands at 42-2-1, with 37 stoppage victories.
