Gervonta Davis: Ryan Garcia Isn’t On My Level Skill Wise

Seemingly since the beginning of time, Ryan Garcia has claimed that he’s more than capable of sullying the record of Gervonta Davis.

After years of goading, provoking, and antagonizing his man, the 24-year-old former interim lightweight titlist will have the opportunity to put his money where his mouth is. On April 22nd, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, both Garcia and Davis will square off in front of what’s expected to be a sold-out and fired-up crowd.

Thus far, Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) hasn’t appeared unnerved. Nevertheless, despite his overwhelming self-belief, Davis has violent intentions. As the 28-year-old continues to sift through countless hours of game tape on his upcoming foe, he acknowledges that Garcia brings a unique skill set to the ring. With that in mind, Davis also notices something else.

“I don’t think skill-wise he’s on my level,” said Davis to ShowTime Sports during a recent interview.

Garcia, by and large, has shown both skills and power throughout the course of his career. In his latest outing, the speedy contender out of Victorville, California, made relatively quick work of Javier Fortuna, dropping the former multi-divisional titlist on several occasions before putting him out of his misery in the sixth round.

Davis, viewed as a sizable favorite on the night, is hard at work as he sharpens the tools he intends on using during battle. But even with the 28-year-old widely expected to take care of business, Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) doesn’t want to summarily dismiss Garcia and overlook him. While he maintains that Garcia isn’t in the same stratosphere as him, the Baltimore product reveals that he’s giving his longtime rival his full and undivided attention during his preparation.

“I still have to respect him as a fighter but I feel as though he’s not on my level as far as skills.”
