Taking the slow, mundane, and somewhat safe route up the ladder might be prudent for his career but that would essentially take all of the fun away.
For Erickson Lubin, he was never interested in facing faded contenders or no-hopers. The sport of boxing is a kill-or-be-killed world and Lubin has enjoyed stepping into the ring with those who are bloodthirsty.
The need to throw on his battle gear and face the best of the best has cost Lubin at times though. In 2017, the Florida, native was brutally stopped at the hands of Jermell Charlo in the first round. Bad outing aside, Lubin would eventually reel off six consecutive victories before eventually coming up short against Sebastian Fundora.
Although he needed to rebuild, Lubin didn’t believe that he needed to protract his time outside of the limelight. So, this past weekend, at the Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lubin (25-2, 18 KOs) threw himself right back in the fire as he was matched up with Luis Arias.
The mouthy fringe contender talked a good game but was unable to back it up, losing via fifth-round stoppage. With the win in his back pocket, Lubin quickly scurried out of the ring, changed his clothes, stopped by the concession stands for a bag of popcorn, and made his way ringside.
For the next few minutes, Lubin watched carefully as Carlos Adames scored a ninth-round stoppage victory over Julian Williams. What’s an extra six pounds? Lubin thought to himself as Adames successfully defended his WBC middleweight interim title. While he’s spent the entirety of his career in the junior middleweight division, Lubin recently revealed that he would have no problem packing on the pounds and moving up in weight.
If the chance to face Adames is actually more of a pipe dream, Lubin won’t whine and complain too much, as long as he’s given a shot at another interim tag holder that currently resides in his division.
“Brian Mendoza or Carlos Adames,” said Lubin on his social media account. “Let’s make it happen, Next!”
