During the last few days, heavyweight veteran Derek Chisora has been very vocal with his position regarding the sport’s ongoing problem with boxers testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.
Chisora believes the governing bodies need to take a more aggressive approach, even with first time offenders – by hitting them with a 10 year ban.
Boxing’s latest high-profile drug testing scandal broke out last weekend, when promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that Dillian Whyte was being pulled from his scheduled rematch with Anthony Joshua – because there were “adverse findings” in Whyte’s drug testing protocol with VADA.
Hearn was able to save the event, with Whyte being replaced by Robert Helenius.
During a recent interview with IFL TV, the British promoter would praise VADA for preventing a fighter with a “performance enhancing drug” in his system from entering the ring.
“A good thing here, is that the testing that we’ve paid for here – above and beyond British Boxing Board of Control testing – has found that a fighter about to enter a bout has a performance enhancing drug in his system – which is a good thing. We’re all disappointed and gutted that the fight is not happening,” Hearn stated.
This is the third drug testing scandal in Whyte’s career. He was banned for two years in connection to a positive drug test in 2012, and he also tested positive for a banned substance in 2019 but was ultimately cleared of those charges by UKAD.
Chisora has faced Whyte in the ring on two occasions. He lost a close, and some felt controversial, twelve round split decision to Whyte in 2016. Two years later, Chisora was ahead on the official cards when he got caught and knocked out in the eleventh round.
According to Chisora, he recently called Whyte with a firm warning.
While not disclosing the details, Chisora claims that if Whyte’s complete test results are revealed – both Hearn and Joshua would have legal grounds to pursue monetary damages.
“I told him he’s f—–. I called and [told him] you’re f—–. I’m like, put it this way, if all the test results come out – Eddie should be suing and AJ should be suing for loss of earnings,” Chisora revealed to Radio Rahim of Seconds Out.
