De La Hoya Predicts “Something Special” In May 4 Clash Between Canelo And Munguia

It was left to Tom Brown from TGB Promotions, in association with PBC, to open up the official press conference to announce the May 4 Las Vegas bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Jaime Munguia at the T-Mobile Arena

He did so by thanking those involved with making the all-Mexican clash happen, including Fernando Beltran at Zanfer, who co-promote Munguia with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Luis DeCubas from PBC and, of course, Canelo and his trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso.

“This really is a very special event, it’s going to be on Cinco De Mayo weekend, and that means a huge fight is happening in Las Vegas, and this all-Mexican showdown will be one of the most anticipated Cinco De Mayo fights in years,” said Brown. “The pound-for-pound great Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez putting his undisputed 168lbs world title on the line in a blockbuster event against the hard-hitting undefeated former world champion Jaime Munguia in a clash of Mexican superstars.”

Brown talked about PBC’s strong 2023, and said that one of the standout events of the year was a co-promotion with Golden Boy, like this one, referring to the April clash between Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Ryan Garcia, which did brisk business.

Brown, enthused by the marketing reach of new broadcast partners Amazon, added: “I want to personally thank Canelo Alvarez, Eddy Reynoso and Luis DeCubas. This fight only got made because of real men like this.”

On stage, Beltran said: “The real winner will be Mexico.”

De La Hoya then took the mic, and Canelo’s former promoter paid his respects to his former fighter, thanking the Mexican icon for giving Munguia the opportunity.

“What a great treat they are giving us on the 4th of May,” said De La Hoya. “When you have two Mexican fighters at this elite level, like Canelo, like Munguia… It’s been a while, since Canelo fought Julio Cesar Chavez [Jr.] but this is different.

“We have a Munguia who’s an ex-world champion, who’s undefeated, who’s young, who’s hungry, who’s coming with everything…

“But I do want to emphasize how special it is when you have two fighters from Mexico in the ring and what makes me most proud is the world will be watching, thanks to Amazon, thanks to DAZN.”
