Rolando “Rolly” Romero and Cromwell Gordon, otherwise known as Coach Bullet, were joined at the hip. They spent countless hours with one another in the gym and developed a close trainer/boxer relationship. Simply put, you wouldn’t see one without the other.
In 2024, however, things have seemingly changed.
“I made a decision to stop dealing with certain fighters,” said Gordon to FightHype.com during a recent interview. “Because of them not listening or them feeling like other people have other information that they need.”
Initially, Gordon was vague. He has a long stable of fighters and could’ve been talking about anyone. But, as Gordon began to open up, he revealed that he flung his car door open and threw Romero out. Although he didn’t get into specifics as to why they split, Gordon did provide us with a few hints.
“Rolly, I built him from 0-0 to world champion. He got people in his ear, you a champion now, I get it but loyalty is everything, disloyalty is nothing.”
It’s unclear who Romero (15-1, 13 KOs) will work with going forward, but he’ll have to get things in order quickly. On March 30th, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Romero will attempt to defend his WBA super lightweight title when he takes on Isaac Cruz.
Romero’s preparation and game plan used to be at the top of Gordon’s agenda. Now, he couldn’t care less. Ostensibly, there was nothing cordial about their decision to go their separate ways.
For those who are attempting to dissect what went wrong and how Gordon will manage to get over it, he doesn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him. In fact, with Romero now gone, Gordon believes he’ll be able to flourish as a coach.
“I’m moving forward with my guys. You gotta shed weight sometimes.”
