Middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr. will be looking to secure a measure of revenge in the coming months.
Eubank has exercised his contractual option for an immediate rematch with former world champion Liam Smith.
Last month at Manchester Arena, Smith pulled off the first big shocker of the year when he dropped and stopped Eubank in the fourth round.
Entering the fight, Smith was a tremendous underdog who had most of his career success at 154-pounds.
The rematch is no surprise, as Eubank claimed he was hit with an elbow during the first flurry of punches to send him down to the mat.
“This morning I activated the rematch clause via my lawyers and sent to my promoters,” Eubank said on Tuesday.
Kalle Sauerland of Wasserman Boxing, who promote Eubank, confirmed that the clause has been activated.
“Chris was up a round on my card,” Sauerland previously told Sky Sports. “He just came off a very good third round. The first round he probably just edged. The second round was Liam, the third round was Chris’, a very clear round and then he caught one. It happens. That’s boxing. Can he do it again? I’d like to see that. A lot of people would like to see that.”
Promoter Ben Shalom of Boxxer, who guides the career of Smith, had previously stated that the rematch could potentially land at Anfield in the final week of May.
“If we can make sure the event takes place near enough to the last game of the season which I think is on the weekend of [May] 21, then there is a possibility,” Shalom previously told Sky Sports. “If we were able to get Anfield it would be the end of May.”
