As of late, Carlos Adames has been forced to settle for his second option.
Initially, after getting his career back on the winning track, the 29-year-old reeled off three consecutive victories. In the immediate aftermath, the Dominican native was hopeful that he had done just enough to warrant a title shot against one of the middleweight division’s current belt holders.
In an effort to placate his championship wishes, Adames was given the chance to compete for the WBC’s interim crown. While it wasn’t what he was hoping for, Adames (22-1, 17 KOs) took full advantage of the opportunity that stood before him.
On October 8th, 2022, Adames made it look incredibly easy against Juan Macias Montiel, stopping the fringe contender in the third round. In the first defense of his newly won secondary title, Adames will attempt to pick up a win against former unified jr middleweight champion, Julian Williams, on June 24th.
On a daily basis, Adames sweats profusely as he continues to put the finishing touches on an arduous training camp. While he’s grateful for Williams stepping up to the plate, candidly, Adames wishes that Jermall Charlo, the WBC full titleholder, were the one standing across from him on the 24th, of June.
“I prefer that fight,” said Adames to FightHype.com. “But I don’t believe he’ll ever take it because he’s a chicken.”
Charlo, 33, has mostly remained both out of sight and out of mind. In 2020 and 2021, the hard-hitting star successfully defended his middleweight title once per year. His scant schedule, in comparison, would be considered an improvement when juxtaposed to his current one. Due to a bevy of personal issues and a previous back injury, the Texas native has been sidelined for nearly two years.
Recently, nevertheless, Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) revealed that he’s on the comeback trail and will defend his title at some point this summer. His proclamation, however, hasn’t made Adames confident that the two will clash this year or at any time in the foreseeable future.
“It’s better that he retires from boxing and not get in the ring with me. He’s gonna avoid me his whole career anyways.”
