So far there is no solidified date or a confirmed opponent for Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
He was scheduled to return in May, likely against WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, but the fight was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. And the next target date is September 12, possibly in a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin.
“Right now everything is on standby, there is nothing going on. There has been no talk of a next fight because of what is going on (with the pandemic). DAZN published that it won’t have fights until July, so right now that’s the future,” said Canelo to Box Azteca.
Canelo is still mentally motivated to fight in the month of September.
“In my mind I’ll be fighting in September, so hopefully this whole issue will pass and we can follow through with that possible date. I do not know what is coming next, because everything is off. There were very good plans for this 2020, so hopefully in a month we will see positive results,” Canelo said.
“I do my workouts, I do strength training, I jump rope. I do my full routine to maintain my good condition; so if I am told that I’ll fight in two or three weeks – I am ready.
The four division world champion took the time to thank the work of all the nurses, doctors and all of the medical staff, who are dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.
“They deserve all my respect and my recognition and gratitude, it is of great value for them to be there knowing how complicated the virus is and they continue to save lives, they are heroes who put their lives on the line for us,” Canelo said.
