Canelo Alvarez Undergoes Left Wrist Surgery

Canelo Alvarez has gone under the knife.

The undisputed super middleweight champion chronicled the left wrist surgery he said he needed immediately following his unanimous decision win against Gennadiy Golovkin in September by posting footage Tuesday on his Instagram page of a bandage being removed from his hand and stitches on top of his wrist.

The 32-year-old Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) also shared separate footage of himself wearing a protective brace on his left hand.

On October 12, Alvarez again acknowledged that surgery was needed for his wrist and that it would take place in the United States.

“September possibly [is when I return). We’ll see what’s best,” Alvares said at the time.

After beating Golovkin in his trilogy fight and admitting that his left wrist hurt “really bad” throughout the bout, Alvarez made it clear that he would be focusing on his health instead of his next conquest.

“I’m gonna take my time,” Alvarez said in his post-fight press conference at the time. “My body needs [rest]. You know, last year I fought four times in 11 months. So, that is why. But I need to take my time a little bit. Maybe May, September [I’ll return], I don’t know. But take my time.

“I had these issues since the Caleb Plant fight [in November 2021]. So, [I said], ‘Ah, it’s OK. It’s OK. Let it [go]. Let it [go].’ And then training started, and it’s a problem, problem, problem. And I need surgery.”

Alvarez will have plenty of opponents to consider once he’s healthy to resume training for his next fight.

The 168-pound king has maintained his position that he seeks a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol after the Russian beat Alvarez in a unanimous decision in May.

Bivol will be fighting Saturday against Alvarez’s Mexican countryman Gilberto Ramirez.
