Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will provide the boxing world with a long-awaited update regarding his next move.
The sport’s undisputed super middleweight king is due to hold court with TV Azteca in his native Mexico on Tuesday. The context of his scheduled appearance only came with a vague preview of what to expect during the exclusive televised interview.
“The undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez visits his TV Azteca home to make important announcements about his career,” TV Azteca announced on Sunday through its social media channels.
Many outlets have speculated that Alvarez will reveal the terms of his previously reported—though unconfirmed—return on May 4. An opponent is not yet attached to the date. Alvarez has entered negotiations with Tijuana’s Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34KOs), though BoxingScene.com has confirmed that talks are not nearly far enough along to where that fight would be finalized and confirmed by Tuesday.
Guadalajara’s Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KOs) has been relatively mum on his career since his last bout, a lopsided unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19KOs) last September 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout was his first of a widely reported multi-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) and headlined a Showtime Pay-Per-View event.
Showtime has since exited the sport after 37 years of service, with its final show held last December 16 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. PBC entered what was reported as a multi-year, multi-fight deal with Amazon Prime, though just one show has been announced so far—a March 30 PPV event headlined by Tim Tszyu vs. Keith Thurman in a non-title fight from T-Mobile Arena.
It is not yet confirmed that Alvarez’s next fight will be part of that series, although such details figure to come to light on Tuesday.
Alvarez previously entered a one-fight deal with PBC to fully unify the super middleweight division in a November 2021 knockout win over then-unbeaten IBF titlist Caleb Plant. Alvarez held the WBC, WBA and WBO titles ahead of their Showtime PPV headliner from MGM Grand Garden Arena, where he scored an eleventh-round knockout to become the first-ever undisputed super middleweight champ in the division’s 40-year history.
Prior to the win over Charlo, Alvarez fought six of his previous seven bouts attached to Matchroom Boxing. The lone exception during that run from December 2020-May 2023 was his win over Plant.
