In order to take his career to the next level, Ryan Garcia was convinced that he needed a different voice in his ears.
Despite praising Joe Goossen for a number of years, following his lopsided knockout defeat against Gervonta Davis, Garcia cleared the deck, canning his now ex-trainer.
On Thursday, Garcia announced that he hired Derrick James, who currently works with top fighters like Jermell Charlo, Anthony Joshua, Errol Spence and Frank Martin.
Calvin Ford, head trainer of Davis’, would have no problem with helping Garcia perfect his craft. In fact, if the 24-year-old were to knock on coach Calvin’s door, the world-renowned trainer admits that he would embrace the opportunity to polish Garcia’s arsenal.
“I would take him with open arms,” said Ford to ESNEWS.
Garcia, in the months leading up to the fight with Davis, bombastically claimed that he would not only dominate the Baltimore native but do so in short and devastating fashion.
Of course, the loquacious contender built his name through his flashy social media videos and speedy yet dangerous showings in the ring. While he mowed down his competition, Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) made sure to keep Davis at the forefront of his mind.
In the midst of his audacious callouts, Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) rolled his eyes, even going as far as to say that Garcia was nothing more than a mere “baby.”
Although he was lambasted for poking and antagonizing Davis over the years, Ford doesn’t fault Garcia for essentially forcing his way into a showdown against his young star.
From a skill standpoint, Ford loves what he sees from the up-and-coming popular fighter. From his flashy combinations to his overwhelming speed, Ford maintains that Garcia has it all.
But, outside of just his abilities, Ford is hugely impressed by the special organ that’s beating inside of Garcia’s chest as an indication that the two would get along in a gym setting.
“Even asking for this fight when he first got on the scene, I can work with that,” Ford said.
