The unexpected fallout emanating from Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr.’s failure to secure a deal, has left ripple effects across the boxing world.
Pegged as arguably the biggest fight that can be made, both Crawford and Spence spent countless months hammering out a deal that would crown the winner as the welterweight division’s undisputed champion. However, as fans began salivating over their mouthwatering bout, the rug was jerked violently from underneath them.
After months of posturing and ostensible advancements during negotiations, Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) threw up his hands in frustration. Though prideful, the Omaha, Nebraska, native claimed that he acquiesced to all of Spence’s demands. Yet, despite doing so, Crawford has stated on numerous occasions that team Spence made it nearly impossible to move forward with an awe-inspiring matchup.
Having abruptly left the negotiating table, Crawford quickly turned his attention toward David Avanesyan. And, following what team Avanesyan described as “quick” and “easy” discussions, the two officially agreed to face off on December 10th.
While boxing fans have expressed their dismay, Derek “Bozy” Ennis, father and trainer of highly ranked welterweight contender Jaron Ennis, is far more than simply disappointed. With a rather meek 2022 schedule, Ennis pins at least some of the blame on his son’s lack of activity on the failure of Spence and Crawford to lock in an official showdown.
“We only fought one time this year because everybody was waiting for Spence and Crawford,” said Ennis during an interview with YSM Sports Media. “That didn’t take place so we got to fight somebody, I don’t care who it is. But we want to fight somebody that means something.”
As Derek alludes to, Jaron’s pugilistic schedule this year consisted of roughly four minutes of actual work. On May 14th, the Philadelphia switch-hitter notched yet another explosive victory. This time, at the expense of Custio Clayton. Although he’s remained sequestered on the sidelines since then, he was rewarded handsomely for his latest triumph.
With the 25-year-old reeling in the 29th win of his brief career, he’s been firmly entrenched as the number one challenger in the IBF sanctioning body. But while a showdown against Spence remains unlikely to take place next, Bozy did provide good news surrounding his son’s next ring appearance.
“I know it’s in January. But we don’t have no exact date right now but I know it’s locked in.”
