Veteran trainer Brian “Bomac” McIntyre believes Chris Eubank Jr. is more than capable of getting revenge on September 2, when he faces former world champion Liam Smith in a rematch on September 2 at the AO Arena in Manchester.
When the two rivals met earlier this year, Smith pulled off a stunner when he knocked Eubank out in four rounds.
In the first bout, Eubank was trained by former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr.
Last week, it was officially announced that Eubank had hired McIntyre to be his new head trainer. McIntyre is best known for his ongoing work with undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford.
McIntyre has carefully studied that encounter and he believes Eubank was winning the fight before making a mistake and getting caught in the fourth.
“He was winning that last fight,” McIntyre told Sky Sports. “He just got careless.
“His performance was great. He was winning the rounds, off the jab. He just got careless. Little small things can make the difference in a fight. I think that he can do a lot better. I think that he can win the fight.”
Some observers wonder if Eubank and McIntyre will have enough time to get familiar with each other.
McIntyre explains that he’s been watching Eubank for years and feels there won’t be an issue with getting properly prepared for Smith.
“I know enough, I’ve been watching his fights,” McIntyre said. “Of course I talked to the team of coaches and we decided, ‘let’s try it’.
“I’d been seeing him around Mayweather’s gym a couple of years back and I saw him at the Top Rank gym a couple of months back. I was a little starstruck! Because you hear about him and talk about him but I never talked to him [before]. It was cool.”
