While a potential showdown between former world champions Andy Ruiz and Deontay Wilder is expected in 2023, there are still no details regarding the fight.
Both boxers won their semi-WBC eliminators.
Last month, Ruiz scored two knockdowns to secure a twelve round unanimous decision over Luis Ortiz in a WBC eliminator. And earlier this month, Wilder brutally crushed Robert Helenius in one round in their WBC eliminator.
Pursuant to a WBC order, Wilder and Ruiz are now on track to collide in a final eliminator – with the winner being guaranteed a world title shot.
However, Andres Ruiz, Andy’s father and manager, is very clear on who they want.
“There is nothing [official]… We have until December to decide who he’s going to fight. But Wilder is the one we want,” the elder Ruiz told Izquierdazo.
And while Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scott, said he’s not interested in that fight, Andy’s team is remaining confident.
“I think Wilder wants [unified champion Oleksandr] Usyk or [Anthony] Joshua, he said he was not interested, but we hope the fight will take place because they are going to make it a mandatory,” Ruiz Sr. said.
The Mexican-American still has a fight remaining on his contract with Premier Boxing Champions, but there’s no rush to define The Destroyer’s next opponent.
Is undefeated Cuban boxer Frank Sanchez another option if Wilder drops out?
“There is one more fight left (with PBC) and they have not told me who we are going to fight with. It can also be with the other Cuban, with Frank Sanchez, but we will see who they want to put him with,” Ruiz Sr. said.
Ruiz is looking to return to the ring by the month of May – against Wilder or another top name in the weight division.
