Keith Thurman, like the rest of us, was interested in seeing how things would play out. With Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. holding all of the keys at 147 pounds, Thurman wanted to know who was the better fighter.
So, the former unified champ jumped on a flight and headed to Las Vegas to check things out. On the way, Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) was bombarded with questions surrounding Jaron “Boots” Ennis. The Philly native has wiped out his competition and let his feelings be known that he would love to face Thurman next.
An amped-up Thurman addressed Ennis’ perpetual callouts, going as far as to say that he’s beaten up one Philly fighter before (Danny Garcia in 2017) and would have no issue doing it again.
News of Thurman being dismissive of Ennis reached the City of Brotherly Love. Although the ball was in his court, Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) didn’t find a need to bash Thurman. He did, however, acknowledge that the former unified titlist is more bark than bite.
“These boxing guys are crazy,” said Ennis to YSM Sports Media. “All they do is talk. He talks way better than he fights.”
The gist of Ennis’ comments stems from Thurman’s inactivity over the second half of his career. In six years, the man nicknamed “One Time,” has fought just three times. But, regardless of his rare ring appearances, Thurman is hoping to land an undisputed title shot against Crawford. Ennis though, is hoping for the same.
With both fighters eyeing the same goal, a showdown between them could be next. If, by chance, the two could successfully hammer out a deal and face off, Ennis doesn’t believe that Thurman, while accomplished, will give him too many issues in the ring.
“Stoppage,” said Ennis when asked how he’ll beat Thurman. “He a good fighter but there’s a lot of things that I see that he do that’s wrong.”
