Middleweight contender Tureano Johnson resurrected his career in his last bout. Now he wants to face the biggest names at 160 pounds.
Johnson is targeting former WBO junior middleweight titleholder and unbeaten middleweight Jaime Munguia later this year or when the opportunity presents itself.
The 36-year-old Johnson (21-2-1, 15 knockouts), who presented the Bahamas at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, stopped previously-unbeaten Jason Quigley on July 18 in Indio, California. Quigley was not able to answer the bell for round 10.
In his previous fight on February 9 of last year, Johnson fought to a split-decision draw against gatekeeper Fernando Castaneda of Mexico.
“Gots to keep the momentum,” Johnson stated on Twitter Thursday night. “Let’s bring on Jaime Munguia. Come and test the waters with a real Middleweight SHARK. Come for a swim, @jaimemunguia15.”
Johnson’s losses have come by knockout at the hands of Curtis Stevens in April 2014 and Sergiy Derevyanchenko in August 2017.
Munguia (35-0, 28 KOs), who resides in Tijuana, Mexico, stopped Gary O’Sullivan in round 11 of last fight on January 11. The fight was Munguia’s debut as a contender at 160 pounds after fighting most of his career as a junior middleweight.
The 23-year-old Munguia, who is now trained by former world champion Erik Morales, won the WBO junior middleweight title in May 2018 as a last-minute replacement, knocking out Sadam Ali in round 5. He would go on to make five successful defenses of the title.
Both Johnson and Munguia fight under the Golden Boy Promotions banner. Munguia is also co-promoted by Zanfer Promotions.
