The demons Adrien Broner was forced to face outside the ring were far more difficult than any heavy-hitter he took on inside of it. Alcohol, a lack of focus, and a propensity for spending cash faster than he could earn it – all led to the 33-year-old’s recent tailspin. From 2019-2021, Broner failed to pick up a single victory. Also, for an additional two-and-a-half-year stretch, he failed to step through the ropes at all.
With Broner taking the time to get his mind right and ridding himself of a few bad habits, he finally returned to the limelight on June 9th, against longtime journeyman Bill Hutchinson. Following his lopsided victory, Broner gave all of his attention to Regis Prograis.
This past weekend, at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Prograis struggled against fringe contender Danielito Zorrilla. Although he managed to eke out the win via split decision, Broner (35-4-1, 24 KOs) was somewhat surprised, yet happy, that the WBC titlist got the job done. Now, with the appetizers out of the way, Broner is hoping that they can set something up for later this year.
“I’m happy you got that gift,” said Broner recently on his social media account. “You kept your belt, now it’s time to get it on.”
Prograis, at numerous times against Zorrilla, fought listlessly, allowing the gigantic underdog to have tons of success. The victory though, is all that he’s focusing on. Broner, on the other hand, believes that Prograis (29-1, 24 KOs) has a ton of things to work on in the interim.
For now, Broner urges his rival to put his phone down, stay away from social media, and return to the drawing board. But, even if the current WBC super lightweight titlist takes Broner’s advice, it doesn’t matter how much work he puts in, when the time is right, Prograis will simply have to endure the beating of a lifetime.
“See you soon my boy, go sharpen that sh!t up. I’m on yo ass like back pockets. I’m go f— you up!”
