Newly crowned WBO bantamweight world champion Jason Moloney is hoping to secure a major fight on home soil.
Last month, the Australian fighter captured the vacant WBO strap with a twelve round majority decision over Vincent Astrolabio in California.
Moloney suffered a hand injury during the fight and will spend the next few weeks healing the injury.
Once he gets back in the gym, his eyes will be set on a hometown blockbuster.
“I’ve been on the road for years in America and have been surprised by my profile in Japan. But it’s only just beginning here and now I’ve got the belt … I knew I had to achieve something big first,” Moloney said to AAP.
“I grew up idolizing Danny Green and saw how much the country loved him and that’s something I’d love. I want to get the whole country excited about when I’m fighting next and filling stadiums.”
Twin brother Andrew Moloney tried to match Jason’s accomplishment the following week in Las Vegas, but suffered a brutal knockout loss at the hands of Junto Nakatani of Japan. Despite the bruising nature of the contest, Andrew only came away with a perforated eardrum.
According to Jason, Top Rank’s CEO Bob Arum is interested in staging a big event in Australia with both Moloney brothers on the card in key fights.
Back in 2017, Top Rank was part of the big event at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, which saw Jeff Horn pull off a shocking upset decision over Manny Pacquiao.
“Bob’s all for it,” Jason said. “We sat down with him and he was the one that brought it up. If I’m looking to fight in September or October that’ll work with Andrew.”
Jason would be very interested in making his first defense in a rematch with Emmanuel Rodriguez.
In 2018, Rodriguez won a close twelve round decision over Jason Moloney. Rodriguez is slated to fight for the vacant IBF title against Melvin Lopez on July 15.
Should Rodriguez win, a rematch would create unification scenario.
If Rodriguez is not available, Jason would be game to face former multi-division champion Nonito Donaire.
“If it was up to me I’d say Emmanuel Rodriguez [would be next],” Moloney said. “To get revenge and have three belts (WBO, The Ring, IBF) on the line, that’s the most exciting fight for me at the minute. But we’ve been after Donaire too. I’ll fight anyone in my division.”
