Romero’s Head Trainer Hoping For Isaac Cruz Next: “He’ll Be An Easier Fight Than Tank”

Cromwell “Bullet” Gordon refused to listen to the naysayers. Instead, the former pro boxer turned trainer placed his head down and continued to push Rolando “Rolly” Romero, heading into his showdown against Gervonta Davis on May 28th.

A fully packed crowd in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center cheered loudly as Davis landed the fight-ending blow in the sixth, sullying Romero’s record. Forced to go back to the drawing board and address their weaknesses, Gordon is confident that Romero will bounce back nicely. In terms of when he expects the highly ranked 135-pound contender to make his return to the ring, Gordon is hopeful that a date will be penciled in sooner, rather than later.

“We’re looking late this year, early next year,” said Gordon to BoxingScene.com.

Determined to use their loss as a springboard into the public eye, Gordon sees no reason why Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) should take a step back before launching another torrid charge towards the top of the division.

As a suitable foe is being worked upon, Gordon hopes that Davis decides to rekindle his rivalry with Romero and grant him an immediate rematch. Nevertheless, with a sequel unlikely, Gordon would welcome a high stakes showdown against fellow top contender, Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz.

“We would like the rematch,” continued Gordon. “If we don’t get that, we’re looking at maybe someone that wants to fight us, which is not really a lot of people that want to fight Rolly. Pitbull is a willing and able opponent. I think that’s a good fight. I think it’s a very, very good fight. I think it would sell as well.”

Much like Romero, Cruz’s claim to fame coincides with a highly publicized showdown against Davis. At the tail end of the 2021 calendar, both parties would meet in the center of the ring and wage an all-out war.

Despite Davis being praised for his pernicious knockout power, Cruz’s chin held up just fine but would ultimately lose a close but clear unanimous decision. Since pushing the Baltimore native to the brink, Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KOs) has recorded back-to-back stoppage victories. But, in spite of his bloodthirsty rampage, Gordon is unafraid of what Cruz brings to the table. Bearing in mind Cruz’s come-forward style of attack, Gordon smiles sinisterly as he envisions Romero having little to no trouble taking his man out.

“He’ll be an easier fight than Tank because you’re gonna stand there and go toe-to-toe. Rolly’s hitting harder than these guys. If you’re standing in front of Rolly you’re just a punching bag.”
