Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has reportedly split from promoters Premier Boxing Champions.
The world’s leading fighter had been expected to fight for the second time since signing a three-fight contract with the promotional organisation, but after his victory over Jermell Charlo in September 2023 they have reportedly mutually agreed to separate.
Alvarez had signed for PBC, run by the influential Al Haymon, upon the conclusion of his agreement with Matchroom and DAZN – his victory in May 2023 over John Ryder.
That they were yet to agree a fight for May 4 contributed to speculation surrounding his future at a time when PBC are transitioning from Showtime to Amazon Prime. It is also being reported by ESPN that he could return to DAZN, upon which fights with Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga – respectively recent victors over Ryder and Padraig McCrory – would become likely.
The 33-year-old undisputed super middleweight champion’s move in the summer of 2023 was considered as negative for Matchroom and DAZN as it was considered positive for PBC. Should he return to DAZN in the context of PBC attempting to establish a rival streaming service it will perhaps represent an even greater coup.
