It’s been a long time since Erickson Lubin was left unaware of his surroundings. At the age of 21, he was brazen, outspoken, and more importantly, had an incredible amount of hubris. Of course, his talent was always noticeable but some were of the belief that he was simply biting off more than he could chew by taking on Jermell Charlo.
Lubin though, wouldn’t listen to anyone’s dubious warnings. In roughly two and a half minutes, however, Lubin was ultimately rocked and stopped. That embarrassing moment, no matter how painful, has built character. In eight of his last nine appearances, Lubin (26-2, 18 KOs) has come out on the winning end. His latest showing, nevertheless, may have taken his career to another stratosphere.
Jesus Ramos Jr. was the new hot-shot prospect. He blew through his competition and seemed to be on the verge of landing a title shot. Lubin didn’t need to fight the rising contender but he chose to.
It wasn’t an easy night at the office, but everything worked out. After grabbing a controversial decision, Lubin is ready to move on. Like always, the selection of his next opponent is out of his control but if the decision were his and his alone, Lubin knows exactly who he would want.
“I wanna fight Charlo again,” Lubin told YSM Sports Media. “I want my rematch.”
More than likely, Charlo is somewhere on an island kicking his feet up and enjoying the fruits of his labor. He may have been dominated by Canelo Alvarez when last seen, but he still took home a career high payday.
With his bank account fattened, Charlo has promised to make his return to 154 pounds in 2024. Lubin, obviously, becomes an option. If they were to square off again, some would question matchmakers. Charlo was undoubtedly the better fighter when they first met and has gone on to become a unified and undisputed champion.
Still, according to Lubin, Charlo’s accolades are cute but in terms of how things would play out a second time around, he expects a completely different result.
“It’s a whole different ball game. This is a different version of me.”
