Regis Prograis was the most important man in the world to Team Haney. The former WBC super lightweight champ, depending on who you asked, was considered the best fighter at 140 pounds, and someone Devin Haney couldn’t take lightly.
Prograis had the typical attributes of a rough night at the office. He’s big, physically strong, mentally tough, has fight changing power, and the definition of championship pedigree. Devin, however, wasn’t unnerved. He strolled to the ring with confidence dripping from each step. Once the bell rang, he showed why.
Rarely were fans who came to support Prograis at the Chase Center in San Francisco, given an opportunity to cheer for their guy. Instead, Devin made sure they remained seated. At no point did the newly turned 25-year-old let his foot off the gas, leading to a lopsided unanimous decision victory. But, even with his record sitting perfectly through 31 fights, and despite a new world title now wrapped around his waist, Devin isn’t looking to get comfortable at 140 pounds.
The five-pound reprieve his body received on fight night was salient, but he could receive an even bigger sigh of relief.
According to the Haney’s, they would like for their next bout to take place in the welterweight division. They aren’t completely ruling out a few more super lightweight fights, but for now, welterweight is ostensibly their preferred choice.
The land of 147 pounds has a ton of names to choose from but only a few interest the Haney’s. Following their win over Prograis, Bill made mention of Keith Thurman, the supremely talented but frustratingly inactive former unified champion.
Initially, Bill was under the impression that Thurman would purchase a ringside ticket to check out his son in person. Thurman though, was seemingly preoccupied. Still, even if he was unable to catch Devin’s performance up close, Bill is positive that the former champ tuned in. Keeping that in mind, he had a pair of questions for the 35-year-old.
“What’s happening Keith? What did you think about that?”
