Either Devin Haney’s getting bigger by the minute, or he has an unappeasable desire to win as many world titles as humanly possible.
After aggregating every major belt at 135 pounds, Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) revealed that he would be moving up to the super lightweight division. Although he made his announcement, he was unwilling to let go of his WBA, WBO, and IBF titles. But, after giving it more thought, Haney realized that, unless Gervonta Davis came knocking, he was simply never going to weigh 135 pounds again.
This Saturday night, at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Haney will officially make his 140-pound debut when he takes on WBC titlist, Regis Prograis.
With an extra five pounds of muscle and a division filled with new names to fight, Haney seemed ready to settle in. However, according to the newly turned 25-year-old, his 140-pound run will be a quick one.
As reported by Mike Coppinger of ESPN, Haney, if he’s successful, will drop his WBC title and move up in weight once again.
News of Haney wanting to intrepidly stomp through the welterweight division has caught the attention of Derek “Bozy” Ennis, father and trainer of Jaron Ennis. According to Haney, once he makes the jump, he doesn’t want to waste any time. But, with Terence Crawford and Jaron Ennis holding the only available major world titles in the division, Bozy is paying attention to Haney’s every move.
All in all, Bozy likes the Haney’s but, for his own health, he believes he shouldn’t jump into the ring with his young son.
“Listen, that’s my man, his pops my man too,” said Bozy during an interview with MillCity Boxing. “But he better leave Boots alone man.”
Jaron, 26, was recently elevated from interim IBF champion to full-blown titleholder. It wasn’t what Team Ennis wanted, but they’ll take what they can get.
Now, the Ennis family will do their best to land bigger fights against notable names. Haney, nevertheless, was never in their plans. Bozy is still trying to wrap his head around Haney fighting in the same division as his son. More importantly, he’s urging Haney to keep his eyes on the prize and focus on Prograis.
If everything goes smoothly and Haney does put on seven pounds of muscle, Bozy won’t have a problem with it, just as long as Haney steers clear of his young champion.
“He gotta get past Regis first but I think he needs to leave Boots alone though.”
