Jermall Charlo was enjoying his time on top. Fat paychecks, world titles, and adoring fans, everything was going according to plan. However, when that life-ship is sailing smoothly, that’s often when things start going downhill.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Charlo was forced to take a two-and-a-half-year sabbatical. Injuries took a toll on him but more importantly, personal issues outside the ring were something he had to address.
Most of his business was taken care of behind closed doors, but Charlo seemingly felt that his personal life was back on track and decided to make his return.
This past Saturday night, at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) took on Jose Benavidez Jr. On paper, it was somewhat of an audition. The boxing world and his contemporaries pulled out their pen and papers and began grading him.
In 10 incredibly lopsided rounds, Charlo looked smooth. He pushed back the smaller Benavidez Jr. and landed whenever he wanted. Although some expected him to look maladroit, the 33-year-old revealed that he was pleased with his performance.
Now, Charlo is sifting through his options. His first priority, of course, is to get his hands on Canelo Alvarez. But if that isn’t a possibility, David Benavidez is a strong candidate. The 26-year-old recently grabbed Demetrius Andrade by the neck and flung his carcass off the super middleweight mountain.
Jose Benavidez Sr., the father of both fighters, saw Charlo up close and personal. The proud dad and trainer gives Charlo credit for beating one of his Jr.’s. However, in no way, shape, or form does Sr. believe Charlo is ready for a matchup with his younger son.
“If he looks like that, David will tear him apart,” Sr. told BoxingScene.com during a recent interview. “David will tear him apart.”
