David Benavidez doesn’t like to do too much talking. Now of course, if you stick a microphone in his face and ask him a few intrusive questions, he’ll begin boastfully talking about himself.
But naturally, Benavidez (27-0, 23 KOs) isn’t the type that enjoys when he’s the topic of conversations. When he isn’t in the ring pummeling someone, he spends his time with family and out of the spotlight. But while he normally doesn’t go searching for attention, thanks to his fighting style, he often finds it anyway.
From the beginning, Benavidez has always wanted the big fights. But up until recently, he was unable to secure them. His frustration, annoyance, and willingness to stick with it, however, finally has him on the sort of stage he believes he was born for.
Following a recent win over Caleb Plant, Benavidez is only a few days away from facing off against Demetrius Andrade. A victory, at least in his mind, is a formality. Handing another elite-level fighter a loss is salient for a variety of reasons. As long as the wins continue to rack up, the 26-year-old believes his status in the division will be undeniable.
“I want people to know that I’m the best,” said Benavidez during an episode on All Access.
Andrade (32-0, 19 KOs) might be his sole focus, but the shadows of Canelo Alvarez loom darkly over the super middleweight division. Ultimately, facing the undisputed champ has evaded him for a number of years now.
Whether he takes him on or not, Benavidez won’t allow Alvarez to dictate his career. With an incredible amount of time left before he hangs ‘em up and countless big wins ahead of him, Benavidez is confident that when the dust clears, he’ll be considered an all-time great.
