Australian promoter No Limit is working on a large event that would potentially fall on a date in March in Las Vegas, according to Fox Sports Australia.
The event would be timed to coincide with the NRL season launch.
In the headline bout, Australian superstar Tim Tszyu would make his second world title defense of his WBO super welterweight championship.
The card would also feature other top Australian boxers like Sam Goodman, Liam Wilson and Nikita Tszyu.
Fox Sports indicates that NRL boss Peter V’landys has embraced the idea of Tszyu defending on the Friday night, before the NRL doubleheader takes place on Saturday, March 2, at Allegiant Stadium.
The organizers expect around 15,000 Australians to be in Las Vegas for the footy launch event that includes four teams – South Sydney, Brisbane, Manly and the Roosters.
Per Fox Sports, No Limit is speaking with several promoters in the United States, and they are also speaking with American broadcasters. Tszyu’s last few fights have been broadcast by Showtime, but the network will cease to air boxing next month.
The opponent of choice is unknown.
No Limit CEO George Rose recently detailed the Tszyu ‘hit list’ – which includes Jermell Charlo, Terence Crawford, Errol Spence, Erickson Lubin, Danny Garcia and Erislandy Lara.
In 2023, Tszyu was very active with three ring appearances. In March, Tszyu picked up a stoppage win over former world champion Tony Harrison. Three months later, Tszyu demolished Carlos Ocampo in a single round. And then last month, Tszyu picked up a dominant twelve round unanimous decision over WBC interim-champion Brian Mendoza.
Tszyu would explain after the fight, that he was competing in Australia for the last time and planned to invade the United States – specifically in Las Vegas.
