Errol Spence Jr. hasn’t officially moved up to the junior middleweight division but it appears as though his time at 147 pounds is coming to an end in the near future.
After years of dominating the competition, the powerfully built southpaw has ostensibly decided to campaign one division higher, at least in the short term. While not set in stone, all signs point to Spence packing on the pounds to take on long-hated rival, Keith Thurman.
Although Spence hasn’t made his future intentions known, Tim Tszyu is throwing his name in the mix as he recently campaigned for the unified welterweight champion to saunter through his division.
“If he wants to come to the big division then yea,” said Tszyu to Fight Hub TV when asked if he’d be interested in facing Spence.
Despite his audacious ambitions, Tszyu’s plate is just about stuffed. On March 12th, in his native land of Australia, the highly ranked contender will place his undefeated record on the line against Tony Harrison. Initially, Tszyu (21-0, 15 KOs) was scheduled to face undisputed kingpin, Jermell Charlo. But after breaking his left hand in training, Charlo was forced to withdraw.
Although he could have waited for the undisputed titlist to return from injury, Tszyu impetuously opted for activity, even if it meant risking it all against Harrison.
With a handful of flummoxing performances, Harrison got back on the winning track by scoring a wide unanimous decision victory over Sergio Garcia in 2022.
Viewed as a slight underdog on the night, Harrison has smirked confidently as he believes that his Australian counterpart has made a huge mistake.
For Tszyu, the mission remains the same, take care of business against Harrison then move into a showdown against Charlo. But while snagging every world title at 154-pounds remains important, once Tszyu places a checkmark next to his lofty goals, he reveals that a matchup against Spence will rise to the top of his to-do list.
“Once I get Harrison out, Charlo, and then, I’ll have Errol Spence.”
