Utilita Arena, Birmingham – Olympic gold medal winner Galal Yafai had no issues in retaining his World Boxing Council International flyweight title, with a first round destruction of domestic level foe Tommy Frank.
Yafai, a gold medalist in Tokyo 2020, raises his record to 5-0 (4 KOs), while Frank drops to 15-4-1 (3 KOs).
At the start of the first, Yafai came out firing with both hands and was taking the fight to Frank. Inside the first minute, Frank went down while hit off-balance by a heavy left that was followed by a right.
Frank easily beat the count, but Yafai was right back on him with more punches. Yafai continued to pound on Frank – with the corner deciding to throw in the towel to stop the contest.
Yafai is being fast-tracked to a world title shot and aims to secure one by the end of next year.
Frank has now dropped two in a row, both by knockout. He was stopped by Jay Harris in the tenth round of a give and take fight, for the British flyweight title, back in May. And then in April of last year, he went to a twelve round split draw with journeyman Craig Derbyshire.
