Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is looking to move Ryan Garcia to a world title shot sooner than later.
Garcia has been out of the ring since January 2021, when he got off the floor to score a knockout over Olympic gold medal winner Luke Campbell.
The unbeaten boxer will return to the ring on April 9, when he faces Emmanuel Tagoe.
De La Hoya would like to get Garcia a fight with IBF, WBC Franchise, WBA, WBO lightweight champion George Kambosos.
At the moment, Kambosos is preparing himself for a world title defense in Australia in the coming months.
He was hoping to face three division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko – but that scenario is on hold after Lomachenko returned to his home country of Ukraine to assist the local military with the ongoing invasion by Russia.
“Ryan Garcia, if everything goes well on April 9th on DAZN, I’m looking hopefully to continue the discussions with Lou DiBella and fight Kambosos,” De La Hoya told The DAZN Boxing Show.
“I’m hearing that Lomachenko is having some difficulties getting over to Australia, we know what he’s doing in the Ukraine which is amazing, He’s defending his country, his people, he’s obviously occupied and doing the right thing for his country. We’re willing to fly over to Australia and talk to DiBella and make this fight happen next for Ryan Garcia in Australia. That’s how committed Ryan Garcia is.”
On the other hand, De La Hoya denied that his company turned away a potential fight with WBA “regular” lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, who returns in May against unbeaten contender Rolando Romero.
“The truth behind it is that we never received any type of offer,” De La Hoya said.
