Floyd Mayweather is a busy man. The retired Hall of Famer enjoys spending his time in exhibition bouts, shopping in different parts of the world, and of course, making smart investments. So forgive him for not being completely caught up with everything that’s going on in the sport he grew up loving. With that said, from the moment he laid his eyes on Curmel Moton, Mayweather stopped in his tracks.
The 17-year-old ostensibly has it all. The ability to box from the outside and the willingness to bang it out up close. With more than 130 amateur wins, along with 18 national titles, Moton has Mayweather excited about what he could become.
Unwilling to waste any time, Mayweather signed his young prodigy to Mayweather Promotions. Although he could’ve gone the Olympic route, both Moton and Mayweather huddled up and discussed his future during several conclaves. It wasn’t a quick decision, but the pair have decided that there’s nothing’s left to prove on the amateur level.
“Been talking with Floyd about turning pro and we just made the decision,” said Moton on The Mayweather Channel. “We ready this Saturday to put on a show.”
Having won titles in five separate weight classes, and after putting Gervonta Davis on the world stage, Mayweather believes he knows a talented fighter when he sees one. Having confidence in Moton would be an understatement. Just a few months ago, Mayweather was attempting to get Leigh Wood, the featherweight division’s WBA champion, to face his newly signed fighter in his debut.
Although it created a few headlines, it was never a realistic fight. Still, even with Wood out of the picture, Mayweather didn’t want to give his fighter a soft touch.
This Saturday night, on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo, Moton will take on Ezequiel Flores. He might be 10 years older and have an undefeated record through four pro fights but Moton isn’t losing any sleep.
Having an all-time great like Floyd Mayweather pumping you up comes with expectations but Moton refuses to let his conjecture break him.
Several years are likely to go by before Moton reaches his potential. Ultimately, when he does, he believes that the hype surrounding him will be justified.
“He’s a solid fighter,” continued Moton when discussing his debut. “He’s gonna come ready and I’m a come ready for sure and I’m a do my thing. I feel like I’m gonna be one of the best in the world.”
