Chantelle Cameron is prepared to follow the lead of her fellow undisputed champion.
The fully unified junior welterweight queen was among the first to sing the praises of the historic measures in place for the Amanda Serrano-Danila Ramos title consolidation bout. It was announced Wednesday that the two will meet October 27 in a unified featherweight title fight scheduled for twelve, three-minute rounds.
Women’s championship bouts are traditionally fought at ten, two-minute rounds as was the case in Cameron’s win over then-unbeaten lightweight champion and box office queen Katie Taylor on May 20 at 3Arena in Dublin. The two will meet at the same venue on November 25, though with the hope from the defending champ of at least raised stakes.
“Throwing it out there after seeing that announcement Serrano v Ramos fighting 12×3 minute rounds,” Cameron stated Wednesday. “I say me [versus Katie Taylor] should follow that and fight 3 minute rounds for the rematch. Spice it up a little.”
Taylor (22-1, 6KOs) did not immediately respond to the callout, though hardly a surprise as the Irish superstar is not as active on social media. Cameron tagged her coaches Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis, along with Matchroom Boxing who promotes both boxers and did not yet publicly acknowledge the request.
Among the responses was perhaps a sobering reality from boxing’s latest trendsetter.
“I tried hun,” Serrano replied to Cameron. “She didn’t want it. Not all are cut out of the task. Good luck.”
Serrano (45-2-1, 30KOs) publicly challenged Taylor to a 12-round fight at three minutes per round at the initial press conference ahead of their historic April 30 clash at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Taylor politely declined the public gesture, though it hardly mattered as the fight was already signed and sealed by that point.
The 20 minutes of action they were granted, produced a championship clash for the ages. Taylor won via split decision in the 2022 Fight of the Year on a night that marked the first-ever women’s bout to headline at MSG.
Camerom enjoyed more success versus the Irish superstar and spoiled her homecoming in a competitive but clear unanimous decision win in May. Taylor moved up in weight to challenge for Cameron’s undisputed 140-pound crown, which is once again at stake in November.
