In February of last year, junior welterweight contender Jack Catterall believed that he pulled off the big upset when the final bell rang for his mandatory clash with undisputed champion Josh Taylor.
Catterall had scored a knockdown and appeared to outbox Taylor in most of the rounds.
Things did not go his way, with Taylor walking away with a twelve round split decision win.
“You can see the celebrations at the final bell between me and the coaches. I not only won the fight but I won it by a clear margin,” Catterall tells BBC Sport.
“I’ve been doing this sport since I was 10 years old. I’d put myself in a position to fight for the pinnacle but it was taken out of my hands. I lost it all because of the incompetence of certain people.”
A rematch was planned, but it never came off – with both men going in different directions.
Earlier this year, Taylor would lose his undefeated record when Teofimo Lopez outboxed him over twelve.
Catterall was back in the ring last Saturday night in Liverpool, as he easily bagged a decision win over former champion Jorge Linares.
Even with Taylor planning to head up to welterweight, Catterall wants to get his hands on the Scottish fighter.
“The talk of the rematch won’t go away and it would be nice to get him in the ring again,” Catterall said. “I do believe that fight happens in the future. It’s definitely what I want.
“He’s the king of contradiction. He made the weight the best he ever has against Lopez but now he wants to move up after that beating. But I’d be open to negotiations. I don’t think Josh is a nice person and has said some quite silly things over the last year or so, which makes it personal now.”
